This training presentation shows procedures used by the U. S. Geological Survey to measure streamflow when streams are covered by ice. Although "Ice Measurements" are generally more difficult to make than open-water measurements and are often made under uncomfortable conditions it is very important that ice measurements be made regularly during the winter. This is because a large part of many winter discharge records depend on such measurements.

The PowerPoint1 presentation is narrated, but you control the pace of the presentation. If the computer you are using can view "MPEG" videos you will be able to take advantage of videos interspersed in the presentation. A test, found at the end of the presentation, can be taken to assess how well you understood the training material. PowerPoint Viewer1 , Excel Viewer1, and Media Player1 (all contained on this CD-ROM) can be installed on your computer, if needed, to view the presentation, videos, or the test.

Supervisors should be shown a completed test before granting credit for Training Class SW4288.
