For uniform and reproducible samples of disturbed soil, we use mechanically packed soil columns. For this purpose we use the Ripple-Lyons packing machine shared with the Infiltration and Drainage Project. During 1989-1991 our projects developed an improved version of the unique soil-packing machine invented by Ripple and others (1973), now used by several units of the USGS.
