MULTIPHASE CONTAMINANT TRANSPORT, REACTION AND BIODEGRADATION

LABORATORY INVESTIGATIONS

Laboratory batch and column studies on uranium transport in well-defined experiments are ongoing. The recent experiments that are being conducted under conditions typical of groundwater suggest that the sorption may be rate controlled. The model RATEQ is being used to develop and test alternative models accounting for this rate limitation. A finding that uranium sorption is rate controlled implies that current models based on equilibrium-controlled sorption over-estimate the mass of uranium immobilized by sorption.
